NOTE: When you sponsor a child, we will choose the neediest child at the time of your sponsorship. As we focus on unequal access to education, the child will most likely be a girl.
If you have any questions prior to sponsorship, or if you wish to sponsor a child of a particular gender or age, please contact us.
When you sponsor a child, you not only allow a child to get the education they want and need, but you provide them with hope for a future with more options. Education offers choices, and studies show that even one additional year of school increases per capita income in developing countries.
As these children complete their education, they will have access to better jobs, which will help them build and support themselves and their families, as well as the remote communities in which they live.
By sponsoring one child, you not only allow that child to go to school, but you also help improve the lives of many in the community.
Your sponsorship pays for the child’s school fees, books, school supplies, uniform, classes, and any other needs that come up. You also ensure that the school they go to is able to not only support and build the current educational programs but that more programs and classes can be added in the future so that even more disadvantaged and marginalized children can attend.
Our Educational Sponsorship model pools all sponsorship money to ensure that more rural disadvantaged and orphaned children have access to education.
When you sponsor one child, you actually sponsor two. This is because we pair the needs of two children. The first child, who is already at the school attending for free, receives school supplies and pays their school fees. The second child, who is usually on a waiting list, is than admitted into the school. We do this so that more children can go to school earlier, as it is much more difficult to teach a child who has missed many years of primary schooling.
We want to ensure that we meet the specific needs of each student. This can include books and school supplies. However in some cases a child will need to have their school uniform and “lunch” or snacks provided to them at the school as well. With the 1 + 1 Program, we can do this.
After you have chosen to support a child’s future, we will send you our sponsorship package which includes information and a picture or pictures of your sponsored child.
We may also mail or email you further information throughout the year.
The children like to receive mail from their sponsors in a different country. Depending on their age and ability, some children may not write back or may not write often. However, they all like learning about different countries and that someone out there is thinking of them.
If you do send mail, please note that the Nepali government has some restrictions and some mail may not arrive or will be delayed. However, so far all of our mail has arrived in Nepal.
If you wish to visit your sponsored child in Nepal, you can do so at any time. We welcome you to do so through our volunteer program or you can simply come to the school on your own.
If you decide to visit we ask that you let us know in writing, at least 30 days prior to your arrival.
You may send packages or gifts to your sponsored child or gifts which can be used by all the children at the school. All gifts will be appreciated by these wonderful children. In the past we have sent warm jackets, books, educational toys and school supplies to the school. These were distributed to many disadvantaged children and their families and are greatly needed and appreciated. If you are sending clothing and it does not fit your sponsored child, it will be given to a sibling or to another needy child.
If you are sending a package, please be advised that it takes 6 weeks to 3 months for a ground-shipped package to arrive from North America to Nepal. Packages have taken up to 4 months to arrive.
Though it is rare, the child’s family, or caretakers may leave with the child and relocate to another area. This would happen if the caretakers find employment in a different area or have to leave for other reasons. Should this happen we ask that you allow us to transfer your sponsorship to another needy child and give them a chance to go to school.
If this happens, we will notify you and send you information about another child.
Nepal’s literacy rate: 48%
Men’s literacy rate: 64%
Women’s literacy rate: 38%
Human and national development remain impaired by the high level of illiteracy.
Nepal has free state-run elementary schools but conditions are so dire that they do not have books, and the level of education is so low that children “graduating” from these schools cannot pass the entrance exams to high school.
To further exacerbate this, poverty and discrimination against certain classes and castes in Nepal and in other areas of SE Asia, affect access to education, even at the primary school level and therefore perpetuates the cycle of poverty in these countries.
Nepal is the poorest country in Southeast Asia and not surprisingly, the rural areas of Nepal are the poorest.
As a result of poverty and a lack of development in remote rural areas, child traffickers have taken away a generation of children who are then sold as servants or are used to beg on the streets of Kathmandu. These children are kept in dismal conditions, are trafficked for sex work, or are simply lost and never to be seen again by their families. Tragically, many of these children simply do not survive.
Most orphans in SE Asia are not orphans but are children who were taken away from their parents who believed that someone was going to “save” their child from poverty and give them an education. Some families lost their life savings and homes in hopes that their child would really be taken care of if they went to the capital with a person promising them a future.
Unfortunately these children do not go to school. They do not get places in loving homes and many are lost forever. There is an estimated 12,000 children who have been trafficked and lost in Nepal alone and each year more children are trafficked to the capital, or to other countries such as India.
However, by focusing on development and prevention; by developing small rural communities, empowering parents or caretakers at legitimate children’s homes, building schools and infrastructure in rural and remote areas, we can help children and families stay together and preserve their families and their rich culture.
By building schools and caring for those who have been traumatized by trafficking or abandonment, we can change the future for these kids. They can grow up and out of poverty and they can have choices in their lives. And through prevention and sustainable development, their tragic stories can become a thing of the past.
For $20 a month, you can change a child’s life.
